Azam FC players
The teams battled to barren draw at the end of regulation time and
Azam were blessed by a save by goalkeeper Mwadini Ali but Shomari
Kapombe and new sign up Saint Preuax Lionnel squandered their chances to
disappoint fans here.
El Merreikh became the third team to cruise into this year’s
semi-final of the Council of East and Central Africa Football
Association (CECAFA) after edging out the Tanzanian champs.
The match kicked off at a cracking pace with each side in search of an opener but no team found the breakthrough.
The teams progressed into the dressing rooms while deadlocked as
Azam squandered numerous scoring opportunities in the opening half.
It was Merreikh who kicked off the second half aggressively and
came close to score only for goalkeeper Mwadini to thwart the
onslaughts.
Erreikh will meet winner of the final quarter-final match between
Uganda champions Kampala City Council Authority and South Sudan’s
Atlabara who were still battling by the time we went to press yesterday.
All semi-final matches will be played at the Amahoro Stadium here tomorrow while teams are resting today.
El Merreikh have previously won three Kagame Cup titles while Azam are still looking for the first silverware in the region.
