The call was made over the weekend by the Mayor of Kinondoni Municipal Council, Yusuph Mwenda, during the launching of a business centre in Dar es Salaam over the weekend.
The centre was launched by the Real Madrid veterans from Spain who are visiting the country. The Spanish soccer giants played against Tanzania Eleven at the National Stadium on Saturday and they won 3-1.
“Investment in sports has the power to improve a nation through social, economic and cultural growth,” said Mwenda. “Sports can give Tanzania a unique advantage in the global race for economic success while helping steer young people away from the trap of crime and violence and towards more constructive ways to fulfill their potential,” he said.
Mwenda said he believed it was high time for corporate bodies in the country to accelerate their efforts in assisting government in many social challenges, particularly through empowering and uniting the youth through sports.
“We believe the development of sports should not only be in the hands of government and I urge the private sector to play its part. As citizens, we are indeed proud to be associated with the development of football in our country,” he said.
He noted that other countries took the decision to invest in football because the beautiful game does not only bring them together, but also offers hope to young players to achieve their dreams, and ignites the passions of fans and their love for the game as well as increase the country’s income.
He called upon Tanzanians to love and promote sports and start incouraging their children to love sports because it is a highly growing employment area in the world.
“Football is here to enhance Tanzania, as an exciting place to live, visit and do business. We can promote our cultural and social heritage while helping businesses and communities grow by investing in our youth,” declared Mwenda.
